Twenty-four hours between the best day and the failure
On 3 July 2026 the Champlain Hudson Power Express did exactly what it was built to do. The 1 250 megawatt link carrying hydroelectric power from Quebec into New York City ran at full capacity during a heat wave, and New York's system operator imported 52 gigawatt hours from Canada that day, the largest volume traded between the two areas since January 2025. On 4 July the line tripped offline.
The sequence is what makes this worth an operator's attention. The same asset produced the strongest evidence for its value and the strongest evidence against depending on it inside a single week. Neither fact cancels the other. Both belong in the assumption you write down.
What the record day actually looked like
The numbers come from the United States Energy Information Administration. Canadian imports met 9 percent of demand across the New York system on 3 July, running at a daily average of 1 400 megawatts per hour from Hydro-Quebec and 800 megawatts per hour from Ontario's system operator. The context was heat: New York recorded a peak hourly load of 31 097 megawatts on 2 July at seven in the evening.
The line itself entered commercial operation in May 2026 after three years of construction, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority expects it eventually to meet up to 20 percent of New York City's power demand. So the asset was roughly two months old when it delivered its record, and roughly two months old when it stopped.
The cause was a cable, and that is the point
Hydro-Quebec traced the outage to a cable section on the United States side of the border. There is no drama in that finding, and the absence of drama is the useful part. A converter station, a length of underground cable, a joint: these are the mundane components every transmission project is made of, and they are also the components that determine whether the megawatts in a press release arrive on the day you need them.
It was also the second interruption since the line went into service, after an earlier outage in June. Two failures in the first two months of operation is not evidence that the project was a mistake, and nobody should read it that way. It is evidence that a new interconnector has no operating record yet, which is a different and more useful statement.
Nameplate is a claim, availability is a history
Every interconnector is announced with a capacity figure and a share of regional demand it will serve. Those numbers are engineering intent. What an operator actually needs is the availability record, and a line commissioned in May does not have one. The distinction usually stays invisible, because interconnectors mostly work, and it becomes expensive precisely when the weather that drives your peak demand is also the weather that stresses the equipment.
For European businesses the transferable lesson is not about New York. It is about how to read the interconnection projects being announced across our own grids, where new capacity is regularly presented as a settled answer to security of supply. A link that is financed, approved and even energised is not yet a link with a track record. Until it has carried a full demand season, its contribution to your resilience planning is provisional.
Where this belongs in your own assumptions
If your site selection, your backup sizing or your interruptible tariff position rests on a specific interconnector delivering a specific share of regional supply, write the commissioning date next to that assumption. Anything commissioned inside the last year should carry an explicit note that its availability is unproven, and the number you plan against should be the one your operations can survive rather than the one in the announcement.
The practical work is unglamorous and cheap. Identify which lines your regional supply actually depends on, find out when each entered service, and ask your supplier what happens to your position when one of them is unavailable during a demand peak. That last question is the one that turns a headline capacity figure into something you can either rely on or price.
