What Apple Actually Priced

Apple's new Mac mini and Mac Studio went on sale September 22, built around the M6 and M5 Pro chips in the mini and the M5 Max and M5 Ultra in the Studio. Apple markets Neural Accelerators in the GPU as the headline change, up to four times faster on-device AI tasks on the M6 mini and up to 512GB of unified memory on the M5 Ultra Studio, in a configuration Apple says ships in late October.

Prices start at $899 for the Mac mini M6 in the US, $1,699 for the M5 Pro version, $2,499 for the Mac Studio M5 Max and $5,499 for the M5 Ultra. Apple's own UK and German stores show the same four configurations at different numbers, laid out below.

The Number Doesn't Change, Only The Symbol

On every one of the four configurations, Apple's UK price uses the identical numeral as the US price: 899 becomes £899, 1,699 becomes £1,699, and so on up the range. At today's exchange rate of roughly $1.32 per pound, that turns a like-for-like symbol swap into a real markup: an $899 machine in the US becomes the equivalent of about $1,190 once a UK buyer's £899 is converted back to dollars, a gap of roughly 32 percent that holds steady across all four models because the numeral itself never moves.

The UK price does include the country's 20 percent VAT, while the US sticker price excludes sales tax, which averages somewhere around 7 percent depending on the state. Backing both taxes out narrows the gap but does not close it: a UK buyer still ends up paying somewhere in the region of a fifth to a quarter more, in real terms, for the same machine.

Germany's Number Moves Too, And More At The Top

Apple's German price is not a straight symbol swap the way the UK price is. The euro numeral itself rises faster than the dollar numeral as the lineup goes up in price, from about 17 percent higher at the entry Mac mini (1,049 versus 899) to a full 20 percent higher at the Mac Studio M5 Ultra (6,599 versus 5,499). Converted to dollars at today's rate, that works out to roughly 33 percent more than the US price on the Mac mini and roughly 37 percent more on the top Mac Studio, before Germany's 19 percent VAT is even considered.

That pattern, a bigger euro premium on the more expensive machine, is worth knowing before assuming a quote is just currency plus tax. A business buying five Mac Studios for a German office is not paying a fixed markup over the US price; it is paying a markup that grows with the size of the order.

What This Means If You're Buying One Now

Anyone budgeting for a new Mac mini or Mac Studio outside the US should plan around the local sticker price shown on their own country's Apple store, not a currency-converted guess from the US number. Financing terms differ too: Apple's UK store lists 6.9 percent APR over 36 months, while the German store offers 0 percent APR over 12 months, which changes the real cost of spreading a Mac Studio purchase over time far more than the sticker price alone suggests.

Buyers eyeing the 512GB M5 Ultra configuration will also have to wait; Apple says that specific memory option ships in late October, after the rest of the lineup that is already shipping now.
