What HTC Actually Announced at IFA

HTC announced on September 3, 2026 at IFA in Berlin that its Vive Eagle smart glasses are expanding from Taiwan, where they launched a year earlier, into the US, UK, and European markets.

The 49-gram frames cost 499 dollars, 429 pounds, or 469 euros, and ship immediately in North America and from September 21 in the UK and EU. HTC co-founder and chairperson Cher Wang framed the device around presence rather than screens: "Technology should free our imaginations, and allow us to create and experience and improve our lives."

Built on Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 with 4GB of RAM, the glasses carry a 12-megapixel camera capable of 3K video, an open-ear speaker setup, a 4-microphone array, and support for prescription lenses from minus 8 to plus 4 diopters.

The Feature That Answers a Fight Servola Has Already Covered

HTC built a specific answer to the exact criticism that forced Meta to change its own smart glasses in Europe this year: a bystander standing near a Vive Eagle wearer can say Stop Filming out loud, and the glasses halt recording.

Servola has covered how Germany's competition regulators and France's CNIL pushed Meta to add a clearer recording indicator to Ray-Ban Meta after complaints that the glasses let wearers film people without their knowledge. HTC's voice-command opt-out goes further than an indicator light: it gives the person being filmed, not just the wearer, a way to actually stop the camera.

The glasses also keep a hardwired external LED that lights whenever the camera is active, and the camera itself disables automatically the moment the glasses come off a wearer's face, HTC said.

Choosing Your AI Does Not Mean Choosing Your Data's Home

Vive Eagle wearers pick between OpenAI's GPT and Google's Gemini inside the companion Vive Connect app, rather than being locked into one assistant the way Ray-Ban Meta locks wearers into Meta AI.

HTC said requests sent to either third-party model are de-identified first, specifically to stop the AI vendor from building a profile of the user, and that no user data is used to train either company's models. Photos and video are encrypted locally on the device by default, and nothing reaches the cloud unless the wearer manually imports it.

Yes, but de-identifying a request does not make the underlying interaction invisible to the vendor's infrastructure: OpenAI and Google still process the query, and HTC's privacy promise rests on how strictly that de-identification step actually holds up once the glasses ship to independent testers and regulators.

Why This Launch Timing Is Not an Accident

HTC picked IFA in Berlin, Europe's largest consumer electronics show, and timed the announcement weeks ahead of Meta Connect, where Meta is expected to detail its own next-generation glasses.

Landing in the UK and EU on September 21, just weeks after the announcement, means HTC's privacy claims will face real scrutiny from the same regulators that already pushed Meta to change its product: Germany's competition authority and France's CNIL both have open interest in this category. A challenger that builds bystander consent and vendor-side de-identification in at launch, rather than adding them after a complaint, is making a different bet than the one Meta made a year earlier.

For EU and UK buyers, the real test is not the spec sheet, it is whether Stop Filming and de-identification perform as described once independent reviewers and regulators get a unit in hand.
