A New Name For An Old Tradeoff

Ring announced on August 26, 2026 that a new encryption standard called TAKE, for Throw Away the Key, becomes the default for every Ring camera worldwide starting in September. Amazon describes it as inspired by the privacy principles of end-to-end encryption while keeping the full Ring feature set intact.

The mechanism: video is protected by unique, rotating encryption keys. A temporary copy sits in a secure cloud enclave that Ring can access only under strict conditions, to power features like Smart Alerts that recognize people, vehicles, or packages. Once that processing finishes, Ring deletes its copy of the key, typically within 24 hours. After that, only the owner and any Shared Users keep keys on their own enrolled devices.

Why This Is Not End-To-End Encryption

True end-to-end encryption means nobody but the account holder and their approved devices can ever decrypt the footage, not even briefly, not even the company that built the camera. Ring has offered that as an opt-in since 2021, and it still does today.

TAKE is a different design: Amazon's systems can and do decrypt footage, on a schedule the company controls, to run its AI features. The key gets thrown away afterward, which limits how long that access window stays open, but the window exists by design. Calling it "inspired by" end-to-end encryption is accurate; calling it end-to-end encryption would not be.

The Feature Trade Nobody Votes On

Ring's own comparison is honest about the tradeoff: full E2EE disables Smart Alerts, Shared Users, and most cloud-based search and description features, because those features need Amazon's systems to see the video content to work at all. TAKE keeps every feature running by keeping a scheduled, deletable access window open instead.

That is a real, defensible engineering choice. It is also a choice most Ring owners are about to make without knowing they made it: TAKE is the new default, applied automatically as it rolls out in phases, and switching to full E2EE requires opening the Ring app and choosing it per device.

What Changes For EU And UK Owners Specifically

For a company processing home video footage, GDPR does not ask whether encryption exists; it asks how long personal data is retained, for what stated purpose, and whether the processing is disclosed. TAKE's answer to all three is now built into a default setting rather than a policy an owner had to actively accept.

The rollout is worldwide, phased from September, with no separate EU-specific mechanism described in Amazon's announcement. UK and EU owners inherit whatever the global default does unless they open their app settings and switch back to E2EE, the same manual step available to every Ring customer everywhere.

What To Actually Check This Week

Owners who bought a Ring camera specifically for the E2EE option, or who assumed the marketing language meant full end-to-end encryption by default, should open the Ring app once TAKE rolls out and confirm which setting is active per device, not per account.

The setting matters most for anyone who films spaces with a professional confidentiality obligation attached, a home office with client calls, a shared entryway in a small practice, or a device covering a room used for regulated work. For everyone else, TAKE is a genuine security upgrade over unrotated standard encryption. It is simply not the same guarantee as the E2EE toggle sitting one menu away.
