A Seed Round With A Government Customer Already
INLEAP Photonics, a laser-defense company based in Hanover, Germany, announced on September 1, 2026 that it closed a EUR 20 million seed round, about GBP 17 million, led by Munich-based UVC Partners, with HTGF, Balnord, Sentris and Scale Capital joining. The company builds ultra-fast laser beam-steering systems designed to neutralize drones in under a second, marketed under the name FASTLIGHT SHIELD, and says the beam is eye-safe by design. INLEAP spun out of the Laser Zentrum Hannover research institute in 2023, founded by Dr.-Ing. Marius Lammers and Dr.-Ing. Felix Wellmann, and raised its first pre-seed round from HTGF in the summer of 2025.
The company already has a government customer. INLEAP lists the German Federal Ministry of Defence and the Bundeswehr Cyber Innovation Hub among its partners, and says it is seeing what it calls strong order intake. UVC Partners investor Amanda Birkenholz put the market shift plainly: drone defence, she said, is no longer purely military, and airports and energy sites now need protection like defence sites do. The new capital is earmarked for manufacturing capacity, quality assurance and certification for security-critical environments, the step a lab-grade system needs before it can be deployed at scale.
The Timeline Nobody Connected
The funding announcement is not INLEAP's first move into critical-infrastructure defense. On April 23, 2026, at Hannover Messe, INLEAP signed a strategic partnership with STARK, a German unmanned-systems manufacturer, to integrate FASTLIGHT SHIELD into STARK's Vanta family of unmanned surface vessels. STARK's chief strategy officer Jan-Patrick Helmsen said the laser technology complemented STARK's own systems and strengthened its ability to deliver solutions immediately. That deal was signed four months before anyone outside the defense-industrial world had reason to think about laser counter-drone systems at all.

It Was Luck, Not Defense
On the night of August 4 into August 5, 2026, a drone carrying Semtex explosives flew into Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe's largest cargo hubs and the operating base for Ukraine's Antonov heavy-lift fleet since 2022. CCTV footage showed the drone deliberately steering into the wing of a parked Antonov aircraft. The device did not detonate. German investigators concluded, per reporting in Bild, that only a technical malfunction stopped it. A second drone then collided with a Boeing 757 that had to go around after the airport closed. Germany's Federal Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, called it a professional attack likely carried out on behalf of a foreign power, and US intelligence officials later told the Wall Street Journal they believe Russia was behind it.
No counter-drone system stopped that device. A manufacturing fault did. That is the gap INLEAP's investors are now funding into a commercial product, and the four countries backing this round, Germany, Poland, Estonia and Denmark, sit along exactly the stretch of NATO's eastern and northern flank where this kind of hybrid activity has concentrated. For any operator running an airport, an energy site or a data center in that stretch of Europe, laser counter-drone defense has moved in about a year from a research bet to a vendor with a government customer and money in the bank.
