A 100 Million Pound Round, Split Between Two Continents

Britain's National Wealth Fund announced on August 31, 2026 that it is putting 52.6 million pounds into a 100 million pound funding round for Nexeon, an Abingdon-based maker of silicon-anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Korea Development Bank and Honda Xcelerator Ventures joined as new investors, alongside existing backers.

National Wealth Fund chief executive Oliver Holbourn called it key to building a globally competitive UK electric-vehicle supply chain, and Chancellor John Healey framed it as proof of British innovation earning growth and jobs. Neither statement mentioned where Nexeon's product is actually made today.

What Silicon-Anode Materials Actually Fix

Silicon-anode materials replace or supplement the graphite anode in a standard lithium-ion battery, and silicon can store several times more lithium ions by weight. Cells built with it can charge faster and pack more range into the same physical battery pack, which is the specific problem Nexeon is selling a fix for to EV makers and battery-cell manufacturers.

The catch that has kept silicon anodes a lab curiosity for years is that silicon swells as it charges, which cracks cells and shortens their life. Nexeon's pitch is a formulation and manufacturing process that controls that swelling well enough to sell at commercial volume, not just prototype quantity.

The Plant That Makes the Product Is in South Korea

The facility that already ships Nexeon's material at commercial scale is not in Britain. It is in Gunsan, South Korea, where Nexeon brought what it calls the world's first commercial-scale silicon-anode production line online in December 2025. The new UK funding goes toward a pilot manufacturing facility, an advanced manufacturing technology unit, and further research and development, not a UK plant running at the same scale.

That distinction did not appear in the launch coverage, which largely repeated the National Wealth Fund's own framing of a British battery champion. A pilot line and a commercial-scale line are different things with different timelines, and only one of them exists today, in Korea.

Why a UK Fund Backs a Company Manufacturing Abroad

None of this makes the investment irrational. Deep-tech manufacturing often scales fastest wherever capital, chemical supply chains, and skilled process engineers already cluster, and Korea's battery-materials industry has all three. Funding UK-based intellectual property, jobs, and a pilot line is a reasonable way to build a future onshoring option without waiting for a first-of-a-kind commercial plant to exist domestically before investing at all.

The honest version of the story is that the National Wealth Fund is buying an option on a future UK-based scale-up, not funding a UK factory that already exists. Both are legitimate uses of public money; only one matches the British-battery-champion headline the announcement generated.

What This Means If You Are Sourcing Battery Materials

Fleet operators, EV makers, and battery-pack manufacturers evaluating Nexeon or any similarly framed sovereign-backed supplier should ask where the commercial-scale plant sits today, not just where the company is headquartered or which government fund appears in the press release. Lead times, export controls, and single-source risk all attach to the actual factory location, which in this case is Gunsan, not Abingdon.

Europe's reliance on Asian battery-cell and battery-materials manufacturing is real and this deal does not change it yet; it funds an attempt to change it later. Treat the distinction between backed-by-a-UK-fund and made-in-the-UK as a standing question for any battery, chip, or critical-materials deal that reaches your supply chain over the next several years.
