A Number Nobody Expects To Hit
Double Fine Productions is asking backers for $400,000 to fund its 2026 Amnesia Fortnight game jam, the studio's long-running tradition of building four prototypes and letting the public vote on which one becomes a real, small game. Buried in the stretch goals is a second number: $100 million, listed as the price of a sequel to Brutal Legend, the studio's 2009 action game starring Jack Black as a roadie thrown into a heavy-metal fantasy world. The listing carries no further explanation beyond "yes, really."
The campaign has already cleared its real goal, showing more than $500,000 pledged from over 6,271 backers as of this week, with the deadline set for October 1, 2026. The Brutal Legend 2 line sits under Double Fine's own heading for a goal you list knowing it will not be reached, not a funding plan.
What The Studio Actually Bought With Its Freedom
Double Fine left Xbox Game Studios on July 6, 2026, keeping full rights to its games and catalog as part of Microsoft's wider divestiture of several 2018-era studio acquisitions. Three weeks later, on July 28, founder Tim Schafer announced the studio was laying off 23 of its roughly 90 staff, describing the cut as "becoming a size that we can sustain" without a publisher's balance sheet behind it.
That is the context the $100 million line sits inside. A studio that spent thirteen years able to fund a project at whatever scale Microsoft chose now lists the real cost of its ambitions in public, next to a jar for spare change. The gap between the two numbers, 250 times the real ask, states plainly what independence costs once the parent with the checkbook is gone.
