On August 18, 2026, Google and the UK Department for Transport jointly announced Operation Blue Skies, in partnership with the UK Met Office, the air traffic control provider NATS, Imperial College London, University of Cambridge, and the nonprofit Contrails.org.

Why Shanwick, and Why Contrails Matter

Contrails trap heat in the atmosphere and, separate from CO2 emissions, are a meaningful driver of aviation's climate impact. Shanwick Oceanic airspace, over the eastern North Atlantic, covers roughly 10,000 flights a year and is estimated to be responsible for about 5% of global contrail warming. Operation Blue Skies is the first state-backed trial to manage contrail avoidance across an entire oceanic airspace region.

AI-generated forecasts identify contrail-forming zones and direct select flights to alter altitude by up to 2,000 feet to avoid them.

Two Winters, Not One Announcement

The program runs 30 months in total, with two operational trial windows of about four months each: winter 2026-27 and winter 2027-28. Contrails form mainly in cold, humid upper-atmosphere conditions, which is why the trials were deliberately placed in the winter months.

That built-in check, two separate evaluation windows before any decision to expand, is precisely the discipline most corporate AI pilots skip. It is worth studying this approach as a template, whether or not a business is itself in aviation.

The Accountability Structure Behind the Claim

The program brings together a government department (the Department for Transport), an air traffic authority (NATS), a tech vendor (Google), and two independent academic partners, Imperial College London and University of Cambridge, alongside the nonprofit Contrails.org.
