A Read-Only Bridge Into Epic, Not a Data Merger
OpenAI announced on September 1, 2026, that healthcare organizations can now connect Epic Systems' electronic health record environments to ChatGPT for Healthcare, a new integration that is explicitly read-only, with no write-back to the patient chart. The announcement, published on OpenAI's own blog, frames the launch as two experiences built on the same connection: clinicians bringing authorized patient information into ChatGPT to review a case, and ChatGPT appearing directly inside the EHR screen layout in supported deployments.
OpenAI backed the launch with evaluation numbers rather than just a product description. Physicians reviewed ChatGPT's responses across 27 clinical use cases, covering tasks such as pre-visit review, clinical timelines, medication review, and handoff summaries, and across 4,363 individual ratings, 99.1 percent of the responses were rated safe. Alongside the EHR integration, OpenAI also launched a Healthcare Public Data plugin giving structured access to nine official public healthcare data sources, naming five of them: ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed.
Two Ways Into the Chart, One Named Pilot Hospital
The integration works in two distinct modes rather than one. In the first, EHR context in ChatGPT, a clinician brings authorized patient information, such as appointment notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation, into ChatGPT to review history and prepare for an appointment. In the second, ChatGPT in the EHR workflow, supported deployments place ChatGPT directly inside the EHR screen layout, so a clinician gets AI assistance without leaving the patient chart. UCSF Health is OpenAI's named pilot partner for the EHR integration itself.
Suresh Gunasekaran, President and CEO of UCSF Health, said that as a pilot partner the hospital is exploring how the integration "can help clinical teams understand what has changed and what matters most across a complex patient record," with the goal of giving "clinicians more time with patients." Access to the integration itself is administrative, not individual: ChatGPT for Healthcare customers ask a workspace administrator to enable it, and ChatGPT Enterprise customers must contact their OpenAI account team to confirm eligibility for a Regulated Workspace. Robert Purinton, Chief AI Officer at AdventHealth, a US hospital system quoted about the wider ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace rather than named as an EHR pilot partner, said the goal for tools like ChatGPT Work and Codex is to "give caregivers and teams more time for the human connection" at the center of patient care.
EU Law Already Requires What OpenAI and Epic Negotiated Bilaterally
The European Health Data Space Regulation, EU law rather than a vendor feature, already requires the vendor-neutral interoperability that the OpenAI-Epic integration builds through a private, one-to-one agreement between two companies. EHDS entered into force on March 26, 2025, becomes generally applicable across the EU from March 26, 2027, and gives the European Commission authority to set binding interoperability standards for electronic health records across every EHR vendor operating in the EU, not just the vendor that happens to strike a deal with a given AI company.
The regulation is built around a patient right, not a vendor partnership: EHDS is designed to guarantee that patients can access and share their own electronic health data, and have it move with them, regardless of which EHR vendor a given hospital or country uses. Cross-border exchange of patient summaries and e-prescriptions is targeted to be operational EU-wide by March 2029, with further staged milestones running through 2031 and 2035.

The Question EU and UK Hospital IT Buyers Should Ask Now
The real risk for European and UK healthcare-tech buyers evaluating tools like ChatGPT for Healthcare is architectural, not technical: an AI-EHR integration built to work with one specific EHR vendor recreates exactly the point-to-point dependency that EHDS was written to prevent from becoming the European default. Epic itself is not a hypothetical presence in Europe; it is one of the largest EHR vendors in US healthcare and already has real deployments on this side of the Atlantic, which raises the stakes for this question now rather than after EHDS's 2027 applicability date.
A European hospital IT director evaluating a ChatGPT for Healthcare-style tool should ask whether the vendor's integration model is built to work across whichever EHR system the EHDS framework eventually standardizes, or whether it only works because the vendor happens to run Epic specifically. The US market is currently building exactly the kind of single-AI-vendor-to-single-EHR-vendor architecture that EU law is structurally designed to route around, and a buyer who waits for a formal procurement conversation to ask that question is asking it too late.
