The Number Europe Wanted To See

Mistral announced on September 8, 2026 that it had closed a 3 billion euro Series D round at a post-money valuation above 21 billion euros, three years after the Paris-based company launched. Mistral itself called it the largest equity round ever raised by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity, with Advent, funds managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg joining as new backers alongside returning investors ASML, Nvidia, General Catalyst, Lightspeed and Salesforce Ventures.

A year earlier, Mistral's Series C, led by chip-equipment maker ASML, had valued the company at 11.7 billion euros. The new round nearly doubles that figure and lands as European governments and companies keep pushing for AI capacity that does not depend on a US hyperscaler.

What Samsung Actually Walks Away With

The same week, Samsung's own newsroom announced a separate, parallel deal: Samsung will build a customized, on-premise Mistral model trained on Samsung's proprietary chip design and manufacturing data, kept exclusive to Samsung's own semiconductor operations. Jun Young-hyun, vice chairman of Samsung's semiconductor division, said the "increasing complexities involved in AI chip design and manufacturing require continuous innovation," and multiple outlets reporting on the partnership describe the goal as faster design cycles and more stable yields on advanced memory, including the HBM4E and HBM5 generations Samsung is racing rivals to ship.

A funding round usually buys an investor future upside on the company's success. This one also buys the lead investor a private AI tool built on its own most sensitive data, running inside its own fabs. Any company taking strategic capital from a customer or partner is agreeing to more than a valuation, and Mistral's own record round is a clean example of what the other half of that trade can look like.
