A Mobile Biped Undercuts A Desktop Toy

TechCrunch reported on 27 August 2026 that Hugging Face has started selling an open-source robot called Microduck for $399. Axios, Bloomberg and Engadget corroborated the price and the specifications within the same news cycle, a level of simultaneous confirmation unusual for a hardware launch from a company better known for hosting AI models than shipping physical products.

Microduck was built with Pollen Robotics, the robotics company Hugging Face acquired in 2025, and it is manufactured by Seeed Studio, a hardware maker with an existing track record shipping affordable electronics to makers and researchers. The pairing puts the team that trained the robot's behaviors together with a manufacturer that already knows how to build the unit at volume and at a low price.

What 399 Dollars Actually Buys

Three hundred and ninety-nine dollars buys a robot that stands 25 centimeters tall, weighs under 800 grams, and carries 15 motors, a camera, a LiDAR sensor, two inertial measurement units and an articulated beak, a sensor and actuator count that would have been unusual on a robot at ten times this price only a few years ago.

Hugging Face lists seven pre-trained behaviors on the device, including walking, standing, kicking, grabbing, roller-skating and self-righting, so a buyer gets working locomotion out of the box rather than a bare chassis that needs months of control-software work before it does anything. The company is positioning Microduck for reinforcement-learning research, robotics education and hobbyist or prototype use, with delivery promised before Christmas 2026.

Reachy Mini Set The Price, Microduck Breaks The Desk

Reachy Mini, an earlier device from the same Pollen Robotics and Hugging Face lineup, already proved a robot in this price range could sell, but it never left a desk. Reachy Mini shipped as a stationary desktop unit priced around $300, useful for expression and camera work but incapable of moving itself across a room.

Microduck keeps a similar price point while adding legs, a camera, LiDAR and dual IMUs, which is the real news inside the announcement: mobility and a genuine sensor suite have arrived at a price previously associated with a toy bolted to a desk.
