What Kaluza and Hyundai Actually Announced

Kaluza, the energy-intelligence platform spun out of Ovo Energy, has partnered with Hyundai Motor Group to build smart EV charging directly into the myHyundai App and Kia App.

The feature goes live in the UK in August 2026, with Australia confirmed as the next market. Instead of downloading a separate app from a charger manufacturer, owners will schedule and monitor charging inside the same app they already use to check their car's range and lock its doors.

Why Putting It in the Car's App Matters

The integration removes a friction point that has held back smart charging for years: a second app, made by a charging-hardware brand, that most drivers never bother to set up.

Kaluza CEO Stephen Fitzpatrick and Hyundai Motor Group VP Woong Tae Hwang have both framed the deal as more than a feature launch, describing it as joint work to set the technical standard for how EVs plug into the wider energy system, a standard they expect the rest of the industry to follow.

The Real Prize: Vehicle-to-Grid in 2027

Vehicle-to-grid technology, due under the same partnership in 2027, would let a parked Hyundai or Kia EV discharge stored power back into the grid in exchange for payment.

The move follows a July 2026 decision by Hyundai and Kia to consolidate their smart and bidirectional charging efforts under one new brand, and it builds on a Kaluza V2G pilot already run with Mitsubishi Corporation in Japan. Smart charging is the low-friction first step; V2G is the step that turns a parked car into an income-generating grid asset.

What It Means for UK Owners and Fleets

For a UK household weighing an EV purchase, the smart-charging rollout is a near-term, checkable feature: cheaper, automatically scheduled charging inside an app already on the owner's phone, with a dated future payoff attached.

For a business running or planning an EV fleet, the practical question shifts from which car to buy toward which car's software ecosystem will actually deliver V2G revenue on schedule. The August 2026 app rollout is the visible signal fleet operators can watch now, well before any V2G payment arrives in 2027.
