The question that moved the stock was not about money

Richard Greenfield put it to Steve Huffman plainly on the 30 July call. Investors believe Reddit has a user problem, especially in the United States, he said, with daily active users having ticked down despite everything the company has invested. Huffman answered that the product work is working, and pointed to improvements in how many new users stay. By then the stock was already down more than ten percent in after-hours trading, on a day when Reddit had beaten every financial expectation put to it.

Second-quarter revenue was 805 million dollars against the 730 million analysts modelled, up 61 percent year on year from 500 million. It was the eighth consecutive quarter of growth above 60 percent. Net income reached 253 million dollars, or 1.25 dollars a share, against 89 million and 45 cents a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA came in at 343 million dollars, a 43 percent margin, more than double last year.

Then Reddit guided third-quarter revenue to between 860 and 870 million dollars, when the street wanted 828 million, and adjusted EBITDA to between 385 and 395 million against an expectation of 368 million. A beat on the quarter, a beat on the guide, and a double-digit fall. The arithmetic only works if the market was reading a different line.

Every financial line beat, and one audience line did not

It was reading the users. Global daily active uniques rose 18 percent to 130.3 million, slightly ahead of the 129.9 million expected. Weekly uniques grew 24 percent and crossed half a billion for the first time, at 514.6 million. On the face of it the audience grew handsomely.

The United States did not. American daily uniques came in at 53.2 million, down from 53.5 million in the first quarter. That is a decline of roughly 300,000 people, about half of one percent, in a business whose revenue beat was 75 million dollars. In pure financial terms the beat is enormous and the decline is a rounding error. The market treated them the other way round.

It had a reason. The United States is where Reddit advertising is worth the most per user, so a flat-to-falling American audience constrains the number that matters even while the international count climbs. Roughly 41 percent of Reddit daily users are American, and they carry a disproportionate share of the money. A quarter in which the profitable audience shrinks and the cheaper one grows is not the same quarter the headline user number describes.

The line built to monetise AI is the one growing slowest

Reddit reports its data licensing inside an Other revenue line. That line produced 43 million dollars in the quarter and grew 24 percent. Advertising produced 762 million and grew 64 percent. Total revenue grew 61 percent. So the business Reddit built specifically to be paid by AI companies is the slowest growing line it owns, and it accounts for about five percent of revenue.

Set that against what the same technology is doing to the other 95 percent. Reddit content has fed Google under a licensing arrangement since 2024, and Google AI summaries appear to be reducing the referrals Reddit gets back. Huffman was careful on the call, saying visibility into referral traffic remains low and that traffic was volatile towards the end of the quarter. On whether the Google relationship renews, he would only say the range of outcomes is wide.

This is the structural point and it generalises well beyond Reddit. You cannot license your way out of disintermediation by your licensee. The payment for the content and the damage to the channel are not the same size, they do not arrive on the same schedule, and only one of them is contractually guaranteed. Reddit is being paid five cents on the dollar by the industry reshaping how the other 95 cents arrives.

Revenue is the last place a channel decline shows up

Reddit is the clearest public example so far of a gap that most owners will meet privately. Revenue grew 61 percent in the same three months that the home-market audience shrank. Anyone reading the profit and loss alone would have concluded the acquisition channel was in excellent health. It is a lagging instrument, and it lags by quarters, because advertising commitments and licensing contracts are signed before the traffic that justifies them arrives.

Huffman gave the more useful admission almost in passing: visibility into referral traffic remains low. That is a measurement problem, and it is the one worth acting on first. When an AI summary answers a question using your material, there is often no click and therefore no referrer to count. The decline does not appear as a drop in a channel you are watching. It appears as an absence in a channel that has stopped reporting.

His strategic answer is defensible. Reddit is not building for drive-by traffic, he said, and a direct repeat visitor is worth far more than a search arrival. That is the right long-term position. It is also an argument that takes years to prove and does nothing for a quarter in which the American number goes backwards.

What to do with a 300,000 person signal

Start by separating the two audiences in your own reporting the way the market just separated Reddit. Growth in a low-value segment can conceal contraction in a high-value one for several quarters, and a single blended user count will hide it completely. If you cannot currently see visitors by acquisition source and by value in the same view, that is the gap.

Then price the referral channel honestly. If a meaningful share of your traffic arrives through search, assume some of it is already being answered upstream and will not arrive at all, and assume you will not be able to measure the loss cleanly. Budget the direct channels, the ones that report reliably, as though they have to carry more than they do today.

For a European business the exposure is the same shape with a different intermediary mix, and the same warning applies to any content asset licensed to a model provider. Read the licence for what it pays and separately for what it enables, because those two numbers are set by different people and only the first one is in the contract.
